Choosing the right types for a team is an important part of Pokemon strategy. A team made up of only one type can be vulnerable to attacks that that type is weak against, resulting in a total-party knockout. As a result, having a diverse range of Pokémon types can provide stability and help players devise better battle strategies. This is especially important when preparing for type-focused Gyms. To build a well-balanced team, it’s best to be aware of each Pokémon type’s weaknesses. Knowing the weaknesses of each pokemon type is essential for winning Pokemon battles.
Pokémon types can be used in a number of ways. Each species has a type, such as Charmander, which is a Fire-type Pokémon, but there are also types associated with Pokémon moves, such as Earthquake, which is a Ground-type move. Moves that match the specific type of a Pokémon deal bonus damage (known as Same-Type Attack Bonus), but most Pokémon can also learn moves that are not of their specific type. Pikachu, for example, can learn the Steel-type move Iron Tail while Charmander can learn the Flying-type move Acrobatics. Electric-type moves have no effect on Ground-type Pokémon, but Steel-type moves do, and Electric-type moves are especially effective against Water-type Pokémon, which are Steel-resistant.

Dual-typed Pokémon, such as Charizard’s Fire and Flying, gain more STAB moves, but they also gain both types’ weaknesses, making defense more difficult. Charizard is vulnerable to Water, Rock, and Electric moves, among others. While having a dual-type Pokémon can provide interesting offensive options, understanding the weaknesses of both types is critical to avoiding a surprise one-hit K.O.
