Pokemon The New Kanto Story Walkthrough & Key Events Guide

Early Game Changes

Your journey begins in Pallet Town, but it’s clear from the start that things aren’t quite normal. Instead of the usual Kanto starters, you receive a Riolu—an early sign that this world has changed.

  • Wild Pokémon on Route 1 are unusual.
  • Route 2 features a shortcut to Pewter City, but you’ll need to find a scientist with HM05 to proceed.
  • When you reach Pewter City, Brock is nowhere to be found. You’ll find him deep in Viridian Forest instead.
  • After rescuing him, head to Route 3. There, a wild Aerodactyl attack sends you plummeting into an unfamiliar location.
  • On Route 4, a scientist gives you the Dynamax Band—again, you’ll need HM05.
  • In Mt. Moon, a surprise trainer battle leads to you earning the DexNav.

Cerulean City & Rock Tunnel

  • Brendan ambushes you at the Cerulean City gate.
  • Misty is missing—Phoebe takes her place as the Gym Leader.
  • Nugget Bridge resets if you leave and re-enter the area.
  • Route 5 is blocked, so your only way forward is through Rock Tunnel.

Inside Rock Tunnel:

  • A rare Flash Pikachu appears.
  • A Dynamax Den encounter with Sandaconda.
  • A mysterious event involving the Odd Keystone teases a Spiritomb-related secret.

Mid-Game: Unraveling the Mystery

  • Lavender Town now has a Gym, led by Roxanne. She gives you the Mega Ring.
  • Defeating her unlocks access to the Celadon Underground.
  • In Celadon City, you’ll need to find Brendan again to remove a Team Rocket block on the road to Saffron City.
  • In Saffron, Giratina shows up and reveals that Arceus has been sealed.
  • From here, you can head to Vermilion City, triggering the appearance of roaming legendaries: Rayquaza, Groudon, Kyogre, Dialga, Palkia, Virizion, Terrakion, and Cobalion.

Other changes to note:

  • Dynamax Dens now appear throughout the map.
  • Mega Evolutions can only be found inside special Dark Rifts.
  • Genesect is locked behind the Fuchsia Gym until you defeat Koga.
  • Starter Pokémon are tied to your progress:
    • Fuecoco early on
    • Sprigatito after getting Flash
    • Quaxly after rescuing Brock
  • Brendan may even cause a Pokémon to permanently die in certain battles.
  • The Pokémon Tower scales with your level.
  • A Route 2 NPC slowly gives you a full set of Gen 1 Pokémon over time.
  • Silph Co.’s difficulty scales based on your progress.
  • Lt. Surge is replaced by Wattson.
  • Flannery appears later at Cinnabar Island, training under Blaine.

Major Story Twists

  • After getting all Gym Badges, “Dark Brendan” appears on Route 23. He’s actually MissingNo. in disguise.
  • Beating him removes a Pokémon blocking the path on Cinnabar Island.
  • A new dive spot leads to an underwater cave where you find the real Brendan—aged and dying. He gives you money, the Reveal Glass, and the Prison Bottle.

From here, things get surreal:

  • MissingNo. begins appearing in human form across Kanto. These encounters can’t be avoided or caught.
  • Even if you defeat him, he’ll respawn shortly after.
  • Mt. Ember holds three special stones: Light, Dark, and Magma.
  • Use them to summon Reshiram and Zekrom on Island 3.
  • The DNA Splicers are located on Four Island, explained by a local doctor.
  • The Silver Wing and Rainbow Wing are hidden in the SS Anne’s healing room. Use them to summon a shiny Lugia or Ho-oh—but you can only choose one.
  • The Shiny Charm can be found next to the Vermilion Pokémon Center to boost shiny rates.
  • Wishing Wells scattered across Kanto hint at timed events and real-world inspirations.
  • TODDITS, a new Ditto variant, appears. It permanently transforms into a random Pokémon before battle.

After facing Eternatus, you wake up back in your room—but the world has changed.

  • Trainers are stronger. Some are now marked as “ready.”
  • Wild Pokémon behave differently.
  • A new shift in reality is underway.
  • Defeating Eternatus opens the Dark Rift, which returns you to a fractured version of Pallet Town.

Optional & Side Content

  • Apricorns can be collected daily in Rider Town—check bushes, trees, and pots.
  • Dyna Cave opens in Rider Town with special battles and events.
  • Rider Town blends Kanto and Hoenn cultures.
  • Professor Birch is there too:
    • He won’t recognize you until you speak with a specific NPC.
    • After that, he’ll give you the Eon Ticket.
    • The ticket connects to your past and unlocks new travel options.
  • Captain Briney also lives in Rider Town:
    • Before getting the ticket, he speaks in riddles.
    • Afterward, he offers passage to Southern Island.
    • He also shows up in Pallet Town later, ready to sail you somewhere entirely new…
